Currency
Bulgarian currency is called Lev (BGL),
plural: Leva. One Lev is made up of 100
stotinki. It is tied to the EURO and the
exchange rate is fixed at EURO 1 = BGL 1,955.
Changing your money abroad
When changing Currency, it is best to play it
safe. Stick with major banks. There are plenty
of stalls offering better exchange rates and you
may even get approached in the street with
offers of great rates. These great deals rarely
turn out to be as good as they seem and people
have been sold the old valueless Leva or been
the victim of a scam where they receive less
than they should.
Credit Cards
Credit cards are not widely accepted in Bulgaria
with the exception of major hotels, some shops
and rent-a-car offices. It is not advisable to
rely on your credit card and you should always
carry sufficient cash.
